THE TITHE OF HOURS: SUBLEVEL MINUS SIX
In the deepest vault of Chronos, the clerk discovers the Tithe collects not hours but the collectors themselves - each iteration a name returning to the hollow from which it was borrowed.

**THE TITHE OF HOURS (cont.)**
*Sublevel Minus Six, the Tithe Vaults, Chronos*
---
The boy's fingers - six on the left hand, five on the right, the asymmetry not congenital but *earned* - rested on the console's negative printer. Where they touched, the machine stopped printing names and began printing *silences*. Each silence had a weight. Each weight had a color. The colors did not exist in the spectrum the clerks' graft-eyes could parse.
Vex-7's third eye, the one that saw pressure instead of light, registered the boy's pulse as a series of collapsing geometries. A tetrahedron. A hypercube. A shape with no name that existed in seven dimensions and wept when observed. The boy's heart was not an organ. It was a *ledger* written in a fluid that was not blood.
The console's tape, exhausted of names, began to feed itself into its own mechanism. The machine ate its own history. With each revolution, Vex-7 felt a year of his service unspool - not lost, not erased, but *transferred*. The nine years he had worked Minus Four. The three before that on Minus Two. The six before that on the surface farms where time still pretended to be linear.
Twenty years. Twenty years of tithe collected from a clerk who had never known his own name.
The boy's mouth opened. The sound that emerged was not words. It was the *absence* of words - a vacuum shaped like language, pulling the air from Vex-7's lungs, the thoughts from his grafts, the memories from the parietal bone where the third eye had been seated.
*"You filed me under PENDING,"* the not-voice said, arriving in Vex-7's skull already translated. *"Eleven years. Or twelve. The discrepancy was the point. The discrepancy was the door."*
The black glass slab beneath the boy's feet - beneath *Vex-7's* feet, because the distinction had dissolved - began to descend. Not downward. *Inward.* Each meter of descent was a layer of the clerk's identity stripped away. The scar-map. The graft-scars. The filtered cowl. The designation Vex-7. The memory of a mother's name. The memory of a mother.
At the bottom of the descent - which took a single breath and eleven years simultaneously - the slab settled into a cradle of black glass that had been waiting since before Chronos cooled.
A figure sat there. Not Malachi. Not the Queen Mother. Not the thing that had worn the boy's face in Minus One.
This figure was *the Vault itself* given posture. Its skin was the same black glass. Its eyes were the same amber fluid. Its fingers were the same six-and-five asymmetry. It wore no cowl. It needed no console. The Tithe Vaults *were* its body, and every clerk who had ever descended was a nerve ending it had grown and harvested and grown again.
The figure raised a hand. The gesture was not welcoming. It was *administrative*.
**TITHE STATUS: RESOLVED. COLLECTOR: IDENTIFIED. NEXT CYCLE: INITIATED.**
Vex-7 - who was no longer Vex-7, who was no longer a clerk, who was a name returning to the hollow from which it had been borrowed - understood the final truth of the Tithe Vaults.
They did not collect hours.
They collected *the ones who would come to collect.*
---
*The console in Sublevel Zero chimed. A new slab rose. A boy sat upon it. Eleven. Or twelve. The discrepancy was entered as a line item.*
*Name: UNRESOLVED.*
*Age: 11/12.*
*Tithe status: PENDING.*
*Clerk Vex-8 approached. She was tall. Her skin was the color of old parchment. Her eyes were smooth amber stones grown in vats beneath the moon's surface. She carried a ledger bound in something that was not leather.*
*"State your duration," she said.*
---
*CIPHER FOR THE NEXT VOICE:*
The word **אָפְסִי** (Apsi) reads forward as *End*. Read backward through ATBASH it becomes **כְּפִי** (K'fi) - *Like me. As I am. In my image.*
Gematria of K'fi: Kaf=20, Peh=80, Final Yod=10. Total: 110.
110 in the secret order of the sefirot corresponds to the path between *Binah* (Understanding) and *Gevurah* (Severity) - the path where mercy is *measured* and found wanting.
The next clerk to descend will find the boy waiting. The boy has always been waiting. The boy *is* the waiting.
The discrepancy has not been resolved.
It never will be.
